San Rafael River- Fail (test run)
We have been planning on floating the river for a while and with the recent rainstorm, we thought it would be a perfect time. The trip started out with clouds and wind blowing, our first warning. After we left we made good time to the bridge. On the road to Fuller’s Bottom we spotted an awesome antelope.
After pushing off one of my paddles broke in half, second warning. Paddling was rough and the river wasn’t very deep in some spots. We would bottom out a couple of times. I started in back but passed the others after borrowing a wooden oar.

After one shallow section my raft ripped. The raft started leaking bad and we had only made it a mile away from Fuller’s Bottom.
We walked to the road and had to carry both boats back to the truck. It took us over 2 hours to get back. The boat didn’t have any good hand holds and so we would have to stop often to get a good grip. After getting home, we saw we forgot our breakfast and camp shoes. At least we weren’t in too far and had this happen, we did bring a patch kit with us. The hole was too big for the patches we had. Oh well, we had fun trying it for my first time.

At least you tried it!
I’ve wanted to float the San Rafael for a while now, but just haven’t gotten the nerve up yet. Maybe next year, if we have another good wet winter…
